What is Aquatic Physical Therapy?
Aquatic therapy is an excellent therapeutic low impact activity for individuals of all abilities. Aquatic therapy activities can be done in either indoor or outdoor pool facilities and consist of cardiovascular endurance and conditioning exercises. These include walking, jogging, jumping, swimming, kicking, and other continuous rhythmic activities that elevate metabolism and improve cardiovascular function.

Why do we do it?
Buoyancy, hydrostatic pressure, viscosity, and turbulence result in an optimal environment for mobility, strengthening, and pain relief. We can begin rehabilitation sooner in our warm therapeutic pool resulting in a shorter recovery period.

Who pays for it?
As long as it is medically necessary, Aquatic Physical Therapy is usually covered by insurance, some HMO’s and Medicare; and we also accept private pay.

Where do patients receive Aquatic Physical Therapy?
At RIO’s indoor, warm (92°) therapeutic pool at our Orange location. There is a lift for clients with wheelchairs and parallel bars to assist with ambulation.

How do patients receive it?
...with a doctor’s prescription and a phone call to the Rehabilitation Institute of Southern California at (714) 633-7400 ext 253. Prescriptions and referrals may also be faxed to (714) 633-0738.
